Some Favorite Bee Team Riding Routes
Below are some recommended rides, covering roads much loved by members of the Bee Team. Clicking on the links will take you to the MapMyRide webpages showing these specific rides. (Depending on your connection and computer speed, it may take 10-15 seconds for the maps to show up on your screen.) These are Google maps with our favorite routes overlaid on them. The maps are printable, much like any Google map, and elevation profiles, excellent cue sheets, and other route information is available.(Click on "Notes" above the map to see a cue sheet; click "Display Elevation" on the left; Click "Print" to print map, cue sheet and elevation profile.)
We have tried to offer a selection of routes of varying lengths as well as routes going in different directions around Waxhaw. Generally it is best to ride in a clockwise direction to avoid having to make left hand turns across traffic.
Coach’s Easy Sunday Route (22 miles)
A ride with few steep grades, though plenty of the usual undulating terrain of Union County. This ride is generally done in a counter-clockwise direction so that Crow Road, a favorite in these parts, can be enjoyed in the more downhill direction.
Bee Team Saturday Morning 30 Miler
An increasingly popular Saturday morning ride with few significant hills and plenty of beautiful countryside. Starting from Waxhaw Elementary School, with a stop after 12 miles at the Kings Deli on Plyer Mill Road.
Bee Team Saturday Morning 47.5 mile option
Taking in a beautiful stretch of cycling roadway along Stack Road, this option offers some wonderful cycling and few difficult hills.
Bee Team Butt Kicker 60 Miles
This ride splits off from the 47 mile route at Landsford Rd (mile 24), continuing straight to take on the challenging Dudley Road hill (repeats on Taxahaw/Overbrook Rd hill permitted; and no complaining allowed climbing into Taxahaw), returning by way of Tradesville. Approximately 3,000 feet of cumulative climbing (GPS).
The Bolt Brothers Saturday Morning Ride (48 miles)
A longtime favorite of the Bolt brothers. You can enjoy this favorite route on your own.
The Van Wyck Ride (33 miles)
This is another favorite Sunday afternoon ride for Bee Teamers, with enough hills in it to bring your conditioning along (about 1,700 feet of climbing). The Van Wyck Road is is a favorite among cyclist in the area, once the initial hill is surpassed.
An Alternative Van Wyck Ride (26 miles)
with fewer hills. The Tarheel Cyclists 30 Mile Route
This ride is courtesy of the Tarheel Cyclists Club and has the benefit of route markings painted on the pavement in yellow paint. Look for “THC 30.”
The THC Metric Century Ride (42 or 58 miles)
This ride is also courtesy of the Tarheel Cyclists Club. Follow the yellow “THC 60” signs (not the THC 100 or THC 30 signs). Start this ride in front of Bolt Brothers Cyclists in downtown Waxhaw. You can ride 42 miles and finish in Waxhaw, or continue to Marvin Elementary School, returning from there by a different route to complete 58 miles.
The THC Fall Century (85 or 98 miles)
Another ride courtesy of the Tarheel Cycling Club. This is nearly a full one hundred miles of riding and includes the longest hill in the region, 0.9 miles on Dudley Road, in the very southeast corner of the ride route. Follow the THC 100 mile markings on the pavement in yellow. This is a challenging ride.
The Pleasant Grove-Cane Creek Park-JAARS Loop (26 miles)
Once past the hills at the beginning, there is a lot of comfortable riding on this loop. Restrooms are available off Harkey Road at Cane Creek Park. Exercise caution on the stretch along Lancaster Hwy (200).
